Las Vegas Travel Guide

Are you looking for the best Las Vegas tips? Then you’re in the right place! We’ve gathered the most important tips for Las Vegas just for you. We’ve visited Las Vegas countless times and are excited to share our experiences and insights.

Travel Tips for Las Vegas

Temperatures in Las Vegas
Las Vegas can get extremely hot. Temperatures above 40°C (104°F) are quite normal from June to October. Make sure to stay hydrated and apply sunscreen regularly. Fortunately, the hotels and casinos have excellent air conditioning. You can also choose to visit during the cooler months. We find April, May, and October to November to be ideal times to enjoy Vegas. During these months, the weather is also perfect for lounging by the pool.

Bring Good Shoes
There’s a lot to see and do in Las Vegas, which means you’ll be walking a lot. Make sure to bring comfortable shoes. Hitting 20,000 steps a day is easy here.

Credit Card Essentials
Bring a credit card with you on your trip to Las Vegas. If you don’t have one, you can apply for one through your bank or a credit card company. Don’t forget to temporarily increase your credit limit if necessary.

Set Your Debit Card to World Coverage
Many debit cards are set to function only within Europe by default. If you’re heading to Vegas, make sure to change this to World coverage!

Take Time to Relax
Most people get less sleep in Las Vegas, and if you stay long enough, you’ll inevitably hit the so-called “man with the hammer” moment (when exhaustion hits you suddenly). You wouldn’t be the first person to fall asleep during a show. It even happened to LasVegasNic! Take some time in the afternoon to relax by the pool.

Transportation Tips in Las Vegas

When you arrive at the Las Vegas airport, you have several options to get to your hotel. We often take a taxi or pick up our rental car.

Here are the different transportation options in Las Vegas:

Taxi
From the airport, there are fixed taxi rates to hotels within specific zones.

Ride Share
In Vegas, you can use ride-share services like Uber and Lyft.

Limo Service
Limos are quite common and affordable in Vegas. You can treat yourself to a limo ride at least once.

On Foot
You’ll do a lot of walking in Vegas, especially if you’re exploring The Strip.

Bus in Las Vegas
Las Vegas has several bus services. You can use the public transport (Regional Transportation Commission of Southern Nevada). The most well-known bus is The Deuce, which runs along The Strip. There’s also the Big Bus, a commercial hop-on, hop-off bus similar to those in cities like Barcelona and London. We rarely take the bus because it’s not much faster than walking.

Rental Car
There’s no point in renting a car if you’re spending most of your trip on The Strip. However, if you plan to visit a nearby national park or go off The Strip, you might consider renting a car for a day or two. If you’re staying at an off-strip hotel, I would recommend renting a car.

Las Vegas Monorail
The Las Vegas Monorail has 7 stations. For a fee, you can travel from MGM Grand to the Sahara Hotel and back. The monorail can be a convenient option if you’re staying at the Sahara Hotel or Westgate, allowing you to reach The Strip more quickly.

Hotels in Las Vegas

We’re often asked which hotels we recommend. This is a tough question because there are so many great hotels in Las Vegas. It also depends on how much you want to spend, whether you value luxury, if it’s your first time in Las Vegas, or if you’re traveling with children. We’ve compiled the following Las Vegas hotel tips for you:

Resort Fees
Resort fees in Las Vegas are common, with most hotels charging them. These fees can be as high as $50 per night and are paid directly to the hotel.

Book Directly with the Hotel
It’s almost always cheaper to book your room directly through the hotel’s website. They also typically offer good cancellation policies. If you find a better deal elsewhere, you can cancel your previous booking and reserve the room you want directly with the hotel. We’ve saved hundreds of dollars this way on trips and ended up with a nicer, larger room.

Complimentary Room Upgrade
We often book a ‘standard’ room and try to get a free upgrade at check-in. This could be a room with a view of The Strip or a larger room. It’s a bit of a gamble, but sometimes the $20 trick or mentioning a birthday or recent wedding can help. There’s no guarantee, though.

Avoid Weekends and Holidays
Hotel room prices are much higher on weekends and holidays than during the week. You can also see price spikes during large conventions, concerts, and sporting events.

Themed Hotels
Las Vegas has several stunning themed hotels. If it’s your first time in Vegas, try to stay in one of these hotels:

  • VENETIAN RESORT => Theme: The city of Venice.
  • CAESARS PALACE LAS VEGAS => Theme: The Roman Empire.
  • PARIS LAS VEGAS => Theme: The city of Paris with the Eiffel Tower.
  • NEW YORK – NEW YORK HOTEL => Theme: The city of New York with the Statue of Liberty.
  • LUXOR HOTEL AND CASINO => Theme: Ancient Egypt with a glass pyramid as the hotel.

Hotel Location
Keep in mind that The Strip in Las Vegas is very long, filled with massive hotels and casinos. If it’s your first time, try to stay in a centrally located hotel on The Strip. You’ll end up walking much less.

Enjoy Las Vegas by Night

Las Vegas truly comes to life as it gets dark. The illuminated hotels and casinos are a sight to behold. You can enjoy Las Vegas by night by simply walking along The Strip or exploring Downtown Las Vegas.

In the evening, you can also enjoy free shows like the Eiffel Tower Light Show and The Fountains of Bellagio on The Las Vegas Strip. In Downtown Las Vegas, there’s a stunning video show on a screen that stretches hundreds of meters. This show is also free!

Las Vegas Skyline by Night

If you want to enjoy the Las Vegas skyline, there are several ways to do so:

Hotel Room
We always try to book a hotel room with a view of The Strip. If you’re lucky, you’ll get a room on a high floor, allowing you to enjoy an even better view of the Las Vegas skyline.

Rooftop Bars

  • The Foundation Room (Mandalay Bay)
  • The Skybar (Waldorf Astoria)
  • Skyfall Lounge (Delano Hotel)
  • 108 Drinks (The Strat Hotel)

High Roller Observation Wheel
The High Roller Observation Wheel at the Linq Hotel is the second-largest Ferris wheel in the world. From a cabin (which can hold up to 40 people), you’ll have a panoramic view of Las Vegas. Tickets are more expensive in the evening than during the day.

Eiffel Tower Viewing Deck
From a height of 140 meters, you’ll have a stunning view of The Strip.

The Strat Tower
The Strat Tower is a 350-meter-tall tower with an indoor and outdoor observation deck that offers a 360-degree view of Las Vegas and the surrounding area.

Helicopter Ride
A helicopter ride offers a truly unique view of the Las Vegas skyline.

Eating in Las Vegas

Las Vegas has plenty of dining options. You can go to a food court, visit a three-star restaurant, or try famous spots like The Heart Attack Grill. If you’re with friends, Dick’s Last Resort at the Excalibur Hotel is also a fun choice.

Where and what you decide to eat is very personal and also depends on your budget. Keep in mind that even at a regular restaurant on The Strip, you’ll easily spend between $50 and $100 per person.

How Much to Tip?

This depends on the place and type of restaurant. Percentages typically range from 15% to 25%. Always check your bill to see if a tip has already been included. If it is, you’ll see an amount listed as ‘tip’ or ‘gratuity’. Some bills also suggest tip percentages. You can then choose how much you want to tip. We often round our tips to nice round amounts. Percentages are just a guideline.
